The battle on the bridge wasn’t over, and Tulia, Sappa, and Tikas were up against it. The bridge rocked and rolled, threatening to knock all three over the edge. It was a struggle to stay on their feet, and even Sappa, built of stony muscle, was fighting to keep his balance.

‘We have to go!’ Tikas decided, glancing at the path leading out of the mountain. ‘They can follow!’

But Tulia shook her head. ‘You go!’ she snapped, turning to him. ‘I’m waiting for Sigurd! He’ll need –’ She stopped, struck in the throat by an arrow, the force of it knocking her off the bridge before Sappa or Tikas could reach her.

They spun to look at each other, and then at Sigurd, who arrived with a limp Nissa.

‘We can go!’ Sigurd panted, feeling his mother shuddering against him. ‘Are you alright? Nissa?’

She nodded, struggling to breathe as he turned back to his friends.

‘Where’s Tulia?’

Sappa inclined his head to the rope line. ‘She went over, Sigurd. An arrow took her. We couldn’t save her.’

‘What? No!’ A horrified Sigurd spun around, fire flaming from his arms. He didn’t care about the bridge, he didn’t care about the mountain. He would burn it all down. ‘Get off the bridge! Now!’ His arms were on fire, and so was his heart. He’d left to save his mother and had lost his best friend.

Closing his eyes, seeing Tulia’s face, he handed Nissa to Sappa and left the bridge, bringing himself down to the canyon floor where Tulia’s body lay, her chest pierced by a vicious shard of rock, an arrow protruding from her throat. One of Sappa’s god-killers, he could see, knowing there was nothing he could do.

He heard panicked noises above him, the creaking bridge, the urgent voices of his friends, and he knew he had to go. But bending down, Sigurd gently touched Tulia’s face, closing her eyelids, hoping no god or goddess would take her for their own. Hoping that now, she was finally free.

He kissed her, his lips lingering on hers one last time. ‘Thank you for everything, Tulia Saari. If I live forever, I’ll never meet another woman like you.’ Tears fell from his eyes as he dropped his head. ‘Be at rest now, my friend.’ And smoothing her dark hair away from her beautiful face, he closed his eyes and reluctantly took himself back to the bridge.
